The first space-based measurements of atmospheric O 3 using UV radiance were obtained with instruments designed to study the ionosphere and the mesosphere at wavelengths shorter than nm,,. Due to Rayleigh scattering and strong O 3 absorption, the penetration of photons below nm is limited to the highest layers of the troposphere. Ground‐based determination of the spectral ultraviolet extraterrestrial solar irradiance: Providing a link between space‐based and ground‐based solar UV measurements the systematic errors that can arise because of atmospheric and instrument instabilities as well as finite slit width effects and is limited by the uncertainty of the.

It is important to measure ultraviolet light because of the possible damaging effects on crops, forests, livestock and humans. This program provides accurate UV-B data available freely on the web, as well as conducts research on the effects of ultraviolet light on plants. Our program works with agricultural and forest researchers to evaluate the effects of UVB and other climate stressors on. Ground- and Space-based Measurements, Models, and Effects, San Diego, CA, July Aug. 1, , in press. Grant WB. An ecologic study of dietary and solar UV-B links to breast cancer mortality rates.

Finally, in addition to new space-based elements, a comprehensive and sustained program of measurements in geospace would include ground-based measurements, supported by NSF and the Air Force, as well as space-based measurements from NOAA and DOD, with NASA taking on a new monitoring role with new resources, coordinating with operational agencies. In: Ultraviolet Ground and Space-based Measurements, Models, and Effects, 30 Jul-1 Aug , San Diego, CA. United States. Kimlin, Michael G. and Parisi, Alfio and Macaranas, J. and Turnbull, David J. () Development of a dosimetric tool to measure human UVA exposures.
